Folds on curtains: types, ways of laying, necessary calculations, application in the interior, recommendations

Curtains are an important part of the design of any room. But a rectangular fabric does not always fit harmoniously into the interior of the room. Save the position of the folds on the curtains.

Types of folds

There are not many variants of drapery, manually you can create 3 types:

one-sided: when performing them, the fabric is distributed in the form of even flounces;

Bow: they are a variation of the unilateral ones, located in different directions

Counter-folded: they have the folds of the fabric facing each other.

When decorating the interior, different types of pleats are often used on curtains simultaneously. Dense fabrics are competed by blinds and curtains.

Radial

To create this type of folds, a braid is required. The design of the curtains in this case involves the presence of a lining, or for their sewing will have to choose a heavy fabric. Its size in this method of assembling pleats is large. The material will require twice the width of the finished curtain.

Bowl

This type of pleats is formed if the fabric is gathered from the bottom, and the filler is inserted on top, so that you get a construction, its shape resembling a glass. Such pleats are recommended on monochrome fabrics that can be draped. When creating side pleats, first the fixing is done manually, and only after that is stitched with a machine.

Cylindrical

This type of curtain design is considered universal, as it is suitable for any type of fabric. When buying the material it is necessary to take into account that the fabric should be 2,5 times wider than the length of the curtain track. The size of the braid is matched to the material itself.

Bouffs

Bouffs have different performance, which depends on the imagination of the master who is engaged in sewing. Most often on the material is made a lot of grips, combined in groups.

Tubes

This type of drapery is formed by using a long braid and creating a more rounded fold shape.

French

This type of folds is also called French drapery, it is obtained by using a special cord, which is pulled through the inserts.

Fan

The fan is similar to the counter folds, with the difference that in this case there is an additional detail – the bottom. This kind of drapery is made on the back side of the drape, and when purchasing material, you should take into account the allowance for the fold. The width of such allowance is equal to half of the depth of the fold.

Chicken legs

Such drapery has an original appearance – it has a main lower point, from which a whole group of folds diverge.

Single sided

Calculation of the amount of fabric needed to create one-sided protections is the simplest. In this case, the length of the cornice, the coefficient and the size of the allowance for the side seams are taken into account.

Bows

They can be found most often in the design of curtains. To perform such a drapery is not difficult.

The minimum size of the fold when making them is only 2 cm, the maximum is 16 cm.

There are several ways of creating bends, and they differ in the ratio:

  • 1:3. In this case, there are no gaps between the edges of the bow folds. It turns out that they touch each other. The consumption of material in this case is quite large, it will require 3 times more than the width of the window opening.
  • 1:2,5. In this case, there is a gap between the edges of the bows, but it is less than the length of the fold itself. The consumption of fabric in this case is slightly less than in the first case, only 2.5 times the width of the curtain rod.
  • 1:2. At this ratio, the distance between the edges of the bow fold is equal to the fold itself. In this case, the fabric is required 2 times the size of the window opening.

Matching

This type of drapery is obtained with a double-sided fold of the fabric.

Methods of laying the pleats

Before calculating the amount of fabric needed to sew the curtains, it is required:

Make an accurate measurement of the length of the curtain rod.

Determine the method by which the side edges will be handled.

Calculate the depth of the pleats, taking into account the type of fabric chosen.

Manually

The canvas of the future curtain can be draped by hand. In this case you must carefully calculate the consumption of fabric and the required meterage of ribbon to form the guards.

In this method of sewing complications arise. All the strings have to pull by hand. In this case they wear out much faster. If they break, the whole drapery will have to be restored at once.

Using ribbon stitched to the top of the fabric

Most often with the help of tape, simple folds are formed. An allowance for the tape must be taken into account. For more complex designs, 3 to 4 rows of ribbons may be required.

They do not need to be sewn on, but connected to the fabric when ironing with an iron.

Required calculations

Calculation of the length of the fabric depends entirely on the choice of the type of guards and the method of finishing the side seams. Most often we have to take into account both the depth of the folds and the desired number of folds. After all the calculations, experienced seamstresses advise to add an additional 2 to 4 cm to the resulting metrage.

Application in the interior of the premises

Curtains with drapery of different types are used to decorate a variety of rooms for different purposes. The choice of the type of folds depends on the type of fabric chosen and its density.

Kitchen

In the kitchen it is customary to use less dense curtains. Thin, easily draped fabrics are preferred.

Living Room

Living rooms are a special category of rooms. In such places it is customary to place curtains with lambrequins. The use of different types of guards to decorate the same cloth is popular, with additional decoration being tassels and fringes.

Bedroom

In this case, dense materials are used, capable of creating the necessary twilight in the room to ensure a peaceful sleep. Curtains in the design of the room should be in harmony with the surrounding interior.

Children’s

For the design of children often choose curtains for the window with bright drawings. When draping such canvases should take into account the location of the figure. Do not choose massive, heavy types of folds.

Tips and recommendations

Tips and recommendations relate to the proper selection of fabric and the design of a suitable type of folds for it. First of all, they must be in harmony with the material. The assembly of folds should be evenly placed throughout the fabric. The depth of the folds must be measured carefully, as even minor deviations will immediately catch the eye.
